The Imaginative World

We are in the 17th century. The kingdom is restless, plots are hatching in the shadows, and only a handful of brave musketeers can thwart the enemies of the Crown. Each patrol is a company in royal service: it has its own motto, colours, and banner. The patrol leader holds the rank of Lieutenant; the troop leader is the Captain.

Shaping the Camp Around It

Each patrol designs its coat of arms and motto on the first day.

The through-line: a conspiracy is afoot — coded letters circulate, clues are hidden around camp.

Meals and gatherings take on period names: "the parade", "the Captain's council".

Pioneering constructions recreate a fortified camp: palisade, watchtower, map room.

Activity & Evening Ideas

**Wide game: The Stolen Letter** — recover a message taken by a spy hidden among the leaders.

**Wooden-sword fencing workshop**: introduction to technique; strong emphasis on respect and fair play.

**Evening of Mottos**: each company presents its coat of arms by candlelight.

**Night of the Musketeers**: paired night mission — hold your bearing, keep your silence.

Going Further

Read an abridged edition of *The Three Musketeers* by Alexandre Dumas. Practice quill calligraphy for coded letters.

Tips & variations

Set the scene from the very first evening: a sealed letter handed to each company immediately establishes the atmosphere. Keep sword activities safe and reward style over winning.
